  • Split systems feature an outdoor compressor and an indoor air handler and evaporator coil. Refrigerant lines link both components.
  • Ductless mini-splits have similar components, but they use multiple indoor units to distribute the cooled air without the need for ductwork.
  • Packaged units house the compressor, air handler and evaporator coil in one self-contained unit located outside your home.

  • The thermostat is the brain of the system. When it tells your air conditioner to run, the air passes through the filter, into the return ducts and over the chilled evaporator coils.
  • Due to the temperature difference, condensation forms on the coils. The condensate pan and drain collect and remove the excess humidity that’s so common in Augusta.
  • Next, the conditioned air exits the blower compartment and travels through the supply ducts. Then, the air flows out of the vents and into your living spaces.
  • When the system runs, the refrigerant travels through a loop of pipes called coils. The condenser coil is on the hot side of the system, and the evaporator coil is on the cold side.
  • Once the compressor liquefies the refrigerant, it passes through an expansion valve. The refrigerant reverts to its gas form, and the temperature plunges as a result.
  • Outside, the fan and condenser coils exhaust heat. These components maintain stable operating temperatures and help the unit work efficiently.
